New Research Review Finds Key Nutrient Levels Falling Across The UK, Prompting Calls To Protect Long-Term Health At Every Age

A new Health & Food Supplements Information Service (HSIS) research review just published in Food and Nutrition Sciences[2] Journal -’ Where Are We Up To With Vitamin, Mineral and Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Gaps?’- has shed light on what nutrients the UK population is really getting from their diets, revealing many vitamin and mineral shortfalls across vital health areas.

Within the review, the research reveals that there’s a low intake of key vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, folate (B9), vitamin D, calcium and selenium, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, prompting experts to warn that action is needed now to future-proof the nation’s health across all age groups.

Dr Emma Derbyshire, who co-authored the research review and is a public health nutritionist for HSIS – www.hsis.org – says: “Vitamins, minerals and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are crucial for everything from brain, bone and heart health, to fertility, energy and immunity, so this latest research review should be a rude awakening for a lot of people who are inadvertently putting their health at risk.

“These low nutrient levels aren’t just tied to one age group; they’re across the board, and as a result there’s an urgent need to encourage more nutrient-dense foods. The nation seems to be aware of their dietary shortfalls as the new HSIS poll found that seven in 10 UK adults are concerned about not getting enough nutrients and an even higher nine in 10 admit their diets could be healthier. Yet this doesn’t seem to be enough to encourage people to hone in on their diet. Worryingly, only half (48%) agreed that healthy eating is important throughout life. But they couldn’t be more wrong. Whatever your age, everyone needs to be bridging dietary gaps with a multivitamin and multimineral supplement including vitamin D and for those that don’t eat fish or like fish, it is vital that they should also including an omega-3 or fish oil supplement.”1
